Frequently Asked Questions: Undergraduate Student Parking

Pursuant to an order of the District of Columbia government and implemented through the Code of Student Conduct, undergraduate students are prohibited from bringing a car or other motor vehicle to the Hilltop Campus, Capitol Campus or GU-Q, or parking a vehicle on the street in Georgetown, Burleith and Foxhall, even if otherwise permitted by the DC Department of Motor Vehicles, DDOT, ParkDC or other DC agencies. Parking personal vehicles on the streets near campus or on campus is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct. 

The Georgetown, Burleith, and Foxhall communities are defined as the neighborhoods bounded on the east by Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, on the south by the Potomac River, on the west by Canal Road and the Georgetown Reservoir, and on the north by Whitehaven Parkway to Foxhall Road to Hoban Road to Reservoir Road to 39th Street to Whitehaven Parkway (including the 1900 blocks of 39th and 38th Streets) to Whitehaven Street to Dumbarton Oaks Park on the north.

Parking in a private garage or a privately rented space off the street is permitted, so long as students do not move cars into neighborhood street parking.

Georgetown will be implementing a new parking monitoring program in the 2026-2027 academic year. Additionally, beginning in the summer of 2026, students will be asked to acknowledge their understanding of this prohibition and to consent to the university’s use of their name and any known address(es) to run license plate searches.

The undergraduate parking policy is available in the Georgetown Code of Student Conduct, the Hoya Neighborhood Living Guide and on various university websites. Additionally, each summer, a postcard is mailed to the permanent address of all undergraduate students detailing the policy, and students are asked to acknowledge their understanding of the policy during required onboarding modules in GU Experience prior to the start of the academic year. Undergraduate students will only need to complete this requirement once during their time at Georgetown.

Policy violations are referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

The prohibition is part of Georgetown University’s Campus Plan, a regulatory structure mandated by the District of Columbia for universities located in residential areas aimed at managing the impacts of a university on its surrounding community.
